Softball is one of the new sports peppering the FISU World Championship programme this year. A variant of baseball, this sport is very popular in the United States. Softball is a mystery. Softball is among seven sports (golf, baseball, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports) under consideration to be a part of the 2016 Olympics. This committee is faced with selecting a cap of 28 sports, meaning there will be room for only one or two additions. Softball is entirely different. Since its 1996 inaugural, Olympic softball has become the highlight event in the sport. Softball is a great sport that shouldn't be elimonated from the olympics. If a sport was actually going to be elimonated from the olympics, elimonate one that is't so popular, and is a dissapointment in medals, such as boxing, rowing, and judo, only winning 1 medal this year; bronze.

Softball is played by teams of nine players, taking turns batting and fielding. The object is to score the most runs in seven innings. Softball is a very easy sport to follow if you have a basic understanding of baseball. Softball is played between 2 teams on a large field, composed of a dirt infield which contains the diamond and running areas, and a grass outfield . There are 4 bases on the infield (first base , second base , third base ,and home plate ); the bases are arranged in a square and are typically 45 to 65 feet apart.

Softball is primarily a summer sport, with the domestic season (club ball season) running from September-March. Recreational teams tend to play one game per weekend.

Teams "sweep" each other often enough that some go without winning against a particular team for years. Teams are often formed through companies, sports clubs, voluntary organisations, schools – or simply groups of friends. There are some single-sex teams, but over 90% of slowpitch softball teams are co-ed, or mixed, which provides particular opportunities for women. Team USA came back refocused in 2006 and again met Japan in the championship round.
